Rex Begonia - Indoor Plant - Plant
The leaf begonia (Rex Begonia) has velvety, hairy leaves which have fascinating markings that never fail to catch the eye. Sometimes they have a silvery hue, but in a different light they may appear pink or green. Although Rex Begonia produces flowers it’s the foliage that makes this plant spectacular. Height supplied: 25-30 cm.
As soon as possible after receiving the Begonia Rex, plant it in a flower pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base with a saucer. Or use an ornamental pot with an inner pot so that the water can be collected. Sprinkle a layer of hydro granules over the bottom of the pot, cover with fresh potting compost and plant the root ball of the Begonia Rex at the correct depth. Fill with compost, allowing sufficient space at the top for watering, and press firmly. Water generously after planting and place the pot in a cool place in partial shade, it needs protecting from direct sunlight, as this could cause leaf-burn. It is recommended to keep turning the plant so that each part of the plant receives light.
The heart-shaped leaves of Begonia Rex-hybrids are very attractive. Each leaf can be up to 30 cm long and is beautifully decorated with many different shades that range from green to pink, silver and a very dark purple. The leaves are very softly haired and the veins of the leaf have a contrasting colour. The colour seems to change with every illumination angle. Sometimes small pink flowers appear from between the leaves. It is advisable to remove them as they can weaken the plant. The name of the species ‘rex’ means king, that’s why this gorgeous indoor plant could be very well called ‘King Begonia’.
Always keep the soil moderately moist, do not allow it to completely dry out. During the growing period add some plant food when watering on a regular basis. This leaf begonia loves a high humidity. Preferably choose a cooler spot and not above the central heating radiator.
