Patio Dahlia 'Ronaldo' - Tuber
You can start planting dahlia tubers during spring. Dahlias are sensitive to frost, therefore, they should be planted when winter is completely over, when there are no signs of late night frosts. A good time to plant dahlias outdoors in the ground is between late April and mid-May in full sun to a partially shaded position. Prepare a large hole in well-drained soil and plant your dahlia 'Ronaldo' tubers approximately 10 cm deep and 30 cm apart, cover with 3-5 cm of soil. Give a light watering followed by regular watering. If planting for the patio, plant in a good potting compost in a pot with adequate drainage. Dahlias will bloom to their maximum potential in complete sunshine.
If you want your plants to flower earlier you can 'withdraw' them. Place them in a shallow tray in moist compost at 15-20° C during the month of April. When shoots begin to appear, place them in potting compost. By the beginning of May, they will get used to the outdoor temperature and you can plant them from mid-May onwards in either your garden or in a pot.
Dahlias make excellent cut flowersPatio dahlia 'Ronaldo' grows abundantly which makes them perfect as a cutting flower and are long lasting in a vase. The best time to cut dahlias is early in the day. Put the stems directly into a large vase full of lukewarm water along with cut flower food.
If you fertilize your dahlias on a monthly basis, the dahlias will bloom in your garden or on your patio from mid to late summer through to the autumn. Dead flowers should be removed regularly as this extends the flowering period well into autumn. Keep the soil from drying out during dry periods.
Dahlias can be overwinteredDahlia tubers can easily be overwintered. If you want to do this, dig up the plants after the first night frost. Then cut all stems off 15 cm above the tuber. Attach a label with the name of the dahlia to remind yourself for the next year. Shake the soil from the dahlia tubers and place in a box with dry compost or sharp sand. Store the dahlia tubers in a frost free area such as a garden shed or greenhouse. Next spring you can plant the dahlia tubers again and they will reward you with their wonderful flowers!
