Canna 'Brilliant' looks fantastic in a large flower pot or planter. Choose a large pot with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of gravel or clay pebbles. Put some potting compost in the pot and plant the tubers of Canna ‘Brilliant’ at the correct depth. Fill the pot with potting compost and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Place the flower pot in an area with complete sunshine.

Canna 'Brilliant' combined with other plants

The bright red flowers and large green leaves of Canna 'Brilliant' give a magical exotic awareness when planted in groups in the garden border. Introduce them to Kniphofia Uvaria 'Grandiflora', Yucca Filamentosa and Crocosmia x Crocosmiiflora). Place the Cannas in a sunny area so that these tropical plants feel at home.

Canna 'Brilliant' originally grows in tropical regions and flourishes throughout the entire year in the tropics. In cooler regions, our Cannas flower from summer well into autumn.

Canna 'Brilliant' can be 'withdrawn'

If you want your plants to flower earlier you can 'force' them. Place them in a shallow tray in moist compost at 15-20° C from the start of April. Pot them up as soon as the tiny shoots begin to show. Harden off to outside temperatures at the start of May and plant outdoors from mid May in either your garden or in a pot. If you have a greenhouse, you can start growing your Cannas in February/March already.

Canna 'Brilliant' is a fast grower and as a result, it needs a lot of water and food. Make sure the soil does not dry out. Place a saucer full of water underneath the flower pot during hot, dry periods. Fertilize frequently for good growth and flowering by mixing plant food with the irrigation water.

Canna 'Brilliant' overwintered

Canna tubers are easily stored over the winter, just like Dahlia's. From the first frost, dig up (or remove from the pot) and cut back all stems to about 15 cm. Label the tubers of the variety to remind yourself for the next season. Divide large tubers immediately and shake off excess soil. Place in a box with compost and sand and store in a frost-free area. Plant out again in the spring but only do so once there are no more signs of night frosts. Your Canna will reward you with gorgeous flowers the whole summer through until autumn.
