Make sure the root ball of Camellia 'Italiana' is well-moistened by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water before planting. Prepare a suitable hole twice the size of the root ball in moist, humus-rich soil. The soil should be slightly acidic. Improve your garden soil by adding some compost. Plant the root ball of Camellia 'Italiana' at the correct depth in the hole. Do not plant too deep as they rely on good drainage, the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Camellia 'Italiana' is fairly hardy, but it still requires a sheltered area where they are protected from winter sun.

Camellia 'Italiana' complements many varieties of plants

In a sheltered spot with acidic, moist soil, Camellia 'Italiana' combines beautifully with Rhododendron Acer Palmatum 'Garnet Dissectum'.

This beautiful evergreen Camellia from Japan with its glossy leaves provides you with fascinating and beautiful flowers. Its flowers have been popular in oriental regions for centuries. At times, the Camellia has been used as a corsage. This flower is also known from the book 'La Dame aux Camelias' by Alexandre Dumas. Camellia 'Italiana' is also very beautiful in a pot on the patio or decking.

The beautiful pink flowers of the Camellia 'Italiana' bloom in March. During this period, the frost can cause brown spots to appear on the flower. Protect your Camellia 'Italiana' against frost by covering it with bubble wrap or a protective cover. Regularly remove the dead leaves. In April, prune the tree if its too large by pruning back any long shoots that spoil the symmetry. Apply some granulated cow manure early in the year to encourage a good bloom and if potted, spray it regularly with rainwater.

Camellia 'Italiana' is happy in a pot on the patio or decking

They look so decorative in a pot on the patio. Camellias in pots require less water, do not allow them to stand with a saucer of water under the pot. As a patio plant Camellias can freeze in winter. Place the pot in a room where the temperature does not exceed 15 ˚ C. If the temperature is too warm it could cause the buds too fall off.
