The Bird of Paradise makes a beautiful houseplant. Place your Bird of Paradise in a bright spot, preferably not in direct sunlight.

The exotic Bird of Paradise flower comes from South Africa. The flowers are truly spectacular. There are blue-violet petals between its upright orange bracts and its large, grey-green leaves are very decorative. Did you know that the Bird of Paradise is part of the banana family?

The Bird of Paradise is tolerant of both drought and heat. Put the strelitzia in a bright spot in the living room with at least three or four hours a day of sunlight. Protect from direct sunlight at midday. They will not flower if grown in inadequate light. During the active growth period water moderately, giving enough each time to make the potting mixture moist, allow mixture to dry out before watering again. During the rest period give just enough to prevent the mixture from drying out completely. Apply standard liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the active growth period only. Cut off its faded flower stems completely.

The Bird of Paradise makes a great tub plant

In the summer, the Bird of Paradise looks beautiful when placed in a sunny spot outdoors. It’s a pretty easy and maintenance free patio plant. Make sure there are holes in the base of the tub to ensure adequate drainage. This plant is not frost tolerant, so bring it indoors before winter and put it preferrably in a fairly cool, dry (12° C) area. You can repot it in the spring if necessary and place in a warm location and water more often.
