2 Italian Jasmine - Climbling Plant
The fragrant Italian Jasmines grow best in potting compost. Choose a large flower or planter per plant, with holes in the base – or, plant them together in one pot. Cover the bottom with pot sherds or a layer of hydro granules. Add a layer of potting compost and plant the Trachelospermum jasminoides (and) Star of Toscane (='Selbra') root balls at the correct depth. Fill the pot with potting compost and press firmly down. Water immediately after planting. Place your fragrant Italian Jasmines in a sheltered, sunny spot on the patio or decking.
Italian Jasmine in the gardenFragrant jasmine combines well with other pot plants. If you like fragrance on the patio, you must not miss combining these Italian Jasmines with Jasminum officinale (common Jasmine) with its white flowers. Another striking and fragrant combination on your patio would be the Trachelospermum jasminoides Star of Toscane (='Selbra') with the yellow Trollius’(Globe Flower), lemon scented geraniums and hanging roses. Or try planting the yellow Clematis tibetana ssp. Tangutica next to the yellow Star Jasmine for a lovely yellow combination. It is also possible to put your Italian Jasmine in the ground for the summer (pot and all), but do not forget to dig it up again before the first frosts and store in a frost free area.
Both the yellow flowers of Trachelospermum jasminoides Star of Toscane (='Selbra') and the white of the Trachelospermum jasminoides have a very strong fragrance and will perfume the whole of your patio. The flowers appear from June until autumn. The pointed, leathery leaves are evergreen and remain on the plant all year long. The shoots curl themselves around the supports in the pot. This can be a strong metal wire, bamboo canes or a frame.
Star Jasmine is also called Italian or Tuscane Jasmine.
All Trachelospermum jasminoides varieties are climbing patio plants with flexible stems that benefit from a climbing support or frame. Place a frame or support in the pot. The shrub can be lightly pruned and thinned out after flowering. For abundant flowers, we advise feeding your star jasmine regularly by adding plant food mixed with the water when watering.
Italian Jasmine in the winterThe star jasmine is relatively hardy and can handle up to -10˚C. We recommend placing your Trachelospermum jasminoides and Trachelospermum jasminoides Star of Toscane (='Selbra') in a cool and light room before the first frosts, then water very sparingly. The temperature can be up to 4-12˚C. Starting in April, the jasmine can handle warmer temperatures and more water. Your fragrant Jasmine can adorn your patio from mid-May. It is possible to leave this pot plant outdoors in mild winters but be sure to bring it in during periods of frost.
